Shawn Bridget Hull- Artist Statement
My clay practice is a conversation between myself, the clay, and the viewer. Presently, I hand build with porcelain exclusively. I love the beautiful way the porcelain fires, the outward appearance of vulnerability used as strength. Through my sculptures I play with forms found in nature using my life and my world in metaphor. Poetry and story are fused directly onto my sculptural work. I explore the unity of nature in human experience. Nature does not surround us, it is us. My narratives strive to be little whispers in the viewer’s ear. It is an invitation to reach out from the form and communicate directly with the viewer my world to theirs. The deeply personal is universal. In my speaking sculptures, I use limited color- as language provides this cue to the viewer’s imagination. I hope to connect and emotionally affect the viewer, strike a chord in recognition that how we treat each other is reflected in how we treat nature,  and to deepen our consideration of both.
