Shawn Bridget Hull- Artist Statement
I create multidisciplinary porcelain sculptures echoing shapes found in nature, the body, and weather patterns. Poetry is integrated into the forms creating another layer of engagement with the narrative of the work.
My forms are irregular, textured, and raw and often combine natural elements such as branches, leather, and metals into the composition. I highlight the materiality of porcelain and porcelain paper clay in rough and varied surfaces, featuring clay’s memory of the artist’s hand.
Conceptually, my work is in metaphor exploring personal experience personified as nature. The unity of the natural world and humanity is a central thesis of my work. Through sculpture and poetry, I reach out from the form and join with the viewer in those sacred spaces.
